Atascadero CA Real Estate
Atascadero is located in San Luis Obispo County, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city is mainly a residential community with a rural character. There are a number of properties that range in size from ½ acre to over five acres and many residents raise livestock or grow agricultural crops.
Atascadero was originally founded in 1913 by Edward Gardner Lewis, a flamboyant promoter and magazine publisher. Lewis purchased land for his visionary community, the American Woman's Republic, which was planned to uplift American womanhood. However, he went bankrupt before his dream could come to fruition and spent several years in prison for mail fraud.
Few of the historic homes and buildings of that era remain as many were razed to make way for modern architecture and design. One of the examples that have survived, however, can be found in the Rotunda Building in an area called the Sunken Gardens.
