Avila Beach is located on the Central Coast of California in San Luis Obispo County . It covers 1.28 square miles of land and is situated 195 miles north of Los Angeles and 241 miles south of San Francisco . This is a small but delightful historic seaside town with a population of 836 residents. Due to the protected coastline, the weather is mild with no extremes of temperature and the ocean is fairly warm compared to other beaches in the area.

Avila Beach is part of the Lucia Mar Unified School District which includes ten elementary schools, three middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, one continuation high school and an adult education program.
HISTORY
The Avila Beach area was home to the Chumash Indians for centuries. Tribal fisherman caught abalone and mussels as well as halibut, bonito and shark which were plentiful in the area. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a well known Portuguese conquistador initially encountered the Chumash in 1542 but Catholic missions were not established in the area until the year 1772.
The Chumash population dwindled and in 1901, the United States Government deeded 75 acres near Mission Santa Ynez to the remaining Indian community. Today there are approximately 5,000 individuals who consider themselves Chumash Indians. The tribe has a small reservation on which is located a federal housing program, the Chumash business council and a thriving bingo parlor.
In 1873, John Harford constructed the Harford Wharf for mail delivery and facilitation of trade. The Marre Hotel was built in Port San Luis in 1876 which was the beginning of the area's reputation as a prime hot springs vacation spot which increased with railroad access in the 1880's and which reputation still exists in Avila Beach today.
