San Luis Obispo has the distinction of being the first town in the United States to ban indoor smoking in all public buildings – including bars and restaurants – since 1990. In addition, no business in the town is permitted to construct new drive through windows or services – including fast food restaurants. There are only two branches of a local bank that had existing drive through services before the city ordinance and they have been allowed to keep them.
