Templeton was founded in 1886 by Chauncey H. Phillips. The site of the town was owned by the West Coast Land Company which was run by Charles Crocker. The town was originally called “Crocker”, but the name was changed and named after Templeton Crocker, Charles' son. Despite a major fire in 1897 which destroyed the business district, the town was restored and many of the early buildings remain today. For example, Phillips' house is now a bed and breakfast on Main Street .
From its beginnings, Templeton was a place that strived to provide quality education for residents. The Templeton Institute was a private school educating students all the way up through college. Today, there is the same access to education with three public high schools, four public middle and elementary schools and two private schools.
The public schools range from small to medium sized populations. Templeton High School has 800 students, while the Independent Study High contains 247. Eagle Canyon High School has a student population of 11. The low population of the schools means smaller classroom sizes and more individual attention from teachers. Both private schools have religious affiliations.
The Temple Hills Christian School, with 36 students, is tied to the Seventh Day Adventist Church while Santa Lucia, home to 48 students, aligns itself with the Unitarian Church .
There are seven colleges and universities within 105 miles, four of them within 55 miles. The four closest are California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (23 miles), Cuesta College (23 miles), Allan Hancock College (52 miles) and West Hills Community College (53 miles).
